⚙️ Moses Thomas
Moses Thomas helped develop milling and dairying in the Plenty Valley, with a lasting Mernda connection at Mayfield. He and his family occupied the homestead complex in the mid-nineteenth century, using stone quarried on the property. Dairy buildings, stables and a bluestone butter factory formed part of a working enterprise rather than simply a country residence. An underground well in the factory helped with cooling, a practical solution before modern refrigeration. The surviving place preserves the relationship between farming, processing and construction skills, making Thomas’s contribution visible within a landscape now undergoing very different forms of development.
